Communications
47. What types of media are you exposed to? How do you
get local and world news? Does it matter to you?
We have a radio, but it is broken and being repaired. We
sometimes listen to news and music.
48. How many radios, TVs, stereos and VCRs do you own?
One radio (being repaired).
50. How many telephones do you own?
We do not have a telephone.
51. If you read, what do you read?
We have no books except a religious text. Namgay can read
some Sanskrit.
52. Are you politically active?
We participate in the elections for the local head man, but
otherwise we are not politically active. To elect a village head
man (GUP) each household elects an elderly man, one of whom
is chosen in a lottery drawing to become village head man. His
term is 5 or 6 years, or longer if he remains popular.
53. What are your perceptions of the rest of the world?
We do not know about the lifestyle of the outside world. We
have no perceptions.
Family Dreams
54. Are you satisfied with your lifestyle?
Yes.
55. Do you consider yourselves better off than your parents
and grandparents?
Yes.
56. What would your family like to own that you think
would make your lives better?
We hope for a road to our village and for electricity. If we
had lights, we could work at night (e.g. sew); it would also
make cooking and looking after the cattle easier.
